Walk in Her Shoes 2008: Domestic Abuse Victim and Author Lisa Lockwood to Speak at Fundraiser for Abused Women

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., April 10 /PRNewswire/ --

Every Step Counts, in association with Clear Channel Radio and St. Louis Community College, is proud to host Walk in Her Shoes 2008, a designer shoe fashion show and fundraiser to celebrate the lives of women who have suffered abuse but have survived to make the positive move from victim to victory.

Lisa Lockwood, noted speaker and author of "Undercover Angel: From Beauty Queen to SWAT Team ... a true story" (published by AuthorHouse -- http://www.authorhouse.com/), will be the keynote speaker for the event. Her inspirational story of survival was recently featured on CNBC's The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch.

"Awareness is the first step to change," Lockwood said. "As a former victim and police officer, I hope to give people insight and inspiration by showing them that domestic abuse is non-discriminatory -- it even happens to women who appear to have it all together."

Lockwood endured childhood poverty and an abusive marriage to become a soldier in Desert Storm, a police officer, an undercover narcotics detective and the first female SWAT team member in the Chicago area. A former beauty pageant contestant, Lockwood had to suppress her obvious femininity to conquer the "Boys Club" of law enforcement, but her beguiling beauty would become her best asset as an undercover narcotics detective. In the gritty world of drug rings, Mafia crime lords and child molesters she rediscovered the power of her femininity and learned to use her disarming sexuality as a professional asset to ensnare criminals.

"Undercover Angel" follows Lockwood's journey, fraught with inner conflict, as she struggles to balance her dangerous profession with a desire to be a complete woman, worthy of genuine love. Her illuminating story of perseverance and unstoppable drive takes her deep into the heart of a violent world and leaves her in a place of happiness, self-confidence and inner peace.

"We hope to encourage thousands of women across the nation who still suffer in silence and have lost their self-respect and self-esteem as a result of domestic and/or sexual assault," said Madeline Gill, founder of Every Step Counts, a non-profit organization providing programs and services designed to increase awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The St. Louis show will be held Aug. 16 at the Mildred E. Bastian Center for the Performing Arts. Details for a second show in Atlanta will be released soon. More information about Walk in Her Shoes 2008 is available at http://www.walkinhershoes.org/.
