Valentine's Day Lovers Feel the Pinch

LONDON, February 10, 2012/PRNewswire/ --

Most Brits will opt for a cosy night in or cook dinner with their partner rather than splashing the cash on a night out this February 14th. According to new research from the romantic social network, Zoosk.co.uk [http://www.zoozk.co.uk ], a fifth (20%) of people will stay in, saying they can still have fun without spending a penny and just over a third (31%) will be cooking dinner with their perfect partner.

Who foots the bill?

First time daters should not expect the Ritz either, a cheap and cheerful pub meal will be the most likely destination for over a third (37%) of Brits in 2012. Traditional values will apply when it comes to paying for it too, with half still expecting the man to foot the bill. For some wannabe Bonnie and Clyde's however, paying won't even be on the agenda, desperate times will call for desperate measures with over 1 in 20 (6%) planning on doing a runner.

Cities of Romance

When it comes to choosing a romantic city in Britain for your Valentine's rendezvous, London tops the list for a third (30%) of people. And if you don't fancy the capital then why not opt for York as the next most popular destination, according to 15% of those surveyed. At the other end of the scale, romantics will be avoiding a night in the UK's second biggest city, Birmingham, with almost a fifth (19.5%) of Brits voting it the least romantic place to be.

First date faux-pas

Scent is the strongest sense according to nearly half (42%) of our respondents with a bad smell, topping the list of a first date no no; so whatever you do, don't forget to spritz, scrub and spray before that first Valentine kiss. Whilst we're looking at turn-offs a third (33%) of respondents say bringing up the ex-factor on a first date shows sparks of negativity and will make them pop their new date back in the dating pool a little quicker than expected.

"With everyone feeling the pinch, we're inspired by Brits' eagerness to still enjoy a little romance whether it's at a cocktail bar, at home or down the pub," said Jane Barrett, International Marketing Director at Zoosk. "Spending time with your loved one is great anytime. So on Valentine's Day, it's not about the money, it's about making a little extra time and effort for the special someone in your life."

Notes to editors:

The Zoosk poll was conducted online in January and February 2012 and fielded over 500 responses via Zoosk.co.uk and utilizing Survey Monkey technology. Of the respondents, 67% were male and 33% were female.
