Oh, awesome children of the leap year
How beautiful and wonderful you are!

You do not celebrate every year, so you seldom come our way
That is why the whole earth is agog to see you today.
We are going to roll out the red carpet
We are going to sing and dance on the street
Because we are going to paint the town red
And our songs of joy will echo until we go to bed.

Happy birthday on this awesome leap day
That was started by the great Julius Caesar
Then Pope Gregory XIII in February 1582 perfected the calendar.
And since then your leap days have come to stay
The last time you invited us to your quadrennial birthday was in 2008
And we have to wait for another four years to celebrate again!
