Straight Up Nostalgia With A Twist, "The Fabric of My Life" Campaign Blends Familiar Music with Modern Fashion

Straight Up Nostalgia With A Twist, "The Fabric of My Life" Campaign Blends Familiar Music with Modern Fashion

April 7, 2009 /PRNewswire/ — As the country faces the cold, harsh realities of the global financial situation, Cotton Incorporated delivers consumers a soft, comforting bit of nostalgia, with a modern twist. The research and promotion company for U.S. cotton growers and importers has revived its memorable "the touch, the feel of cotton" music, reinterpreted for today's consumers by three young vocalists: Zooey Deschanel, Jazmine Sullivan, and Miranda Lambert. The new television commercials, created by DDB New York, began airing on April 5 as part of a marketing strategy that also includes print and Internet components.

The new commercials present a day-in-the-life montage of the vocalists' lives, scored with each artist's unique interpretation of the celebrated music and lyrics. Actress/singer Zooey Deschanel riffs contemporary with her take; five-time Grammy-nominated Jazmine Sullivan (21) lends her rhythm and blues style to the melody; Academy of Country Music's "Album of the Year" Winner and two-time Grammy nominee Miranda Lambert (24) delivers a country twist to the tune. The melody, recognizable to two generations of consumers, was retired in 2001 and was revived because "It's the right message at the right time," says Glenn Sciachitano, Director of Consumer Advertising at Cotton Incorporated.

"Since 2001, the company's advertising has stressed the fashionability, versatility and easy care benefits of cotton to the 18-34 female demographic ," says Sciachitano. "The new campaign retains that fresh, modern fashion focus, while paying tribute to the brand's rich heritage."

The new commercials illustrate the versatility of cotton by showing how it fits into the lives and wardrobe styles of three very different artists, whether they are walking the red carpet or simply engaging in their favorite everyday activities. The day-in-the-life montage of each performer is scored with a unique musical interpretation: Actress/ singer Zooey Deschanel (28) provides a retro pop sensibility with her take on the tune; two-time Grammy nominee Miranda Lambert (24) delivers a country twist; and five-time Grammy-nominated Jazmine Sullivan (21) lends her rhythm-and-blues style to the melody.

"People of all ages fondly remember the 'cotton song,'" says Ric Hendee, Vice President of Consumer Marketing at Cotton Incorporated. "With these new renditions, cotton gains a stylish, youthful energy which will help demonstrate that cotton is in the full range of today's fashion."

Internet components are slated to roll out in May and will include such interactive attractions as a Zooey Deschanel Stylebook, a look inside Miranda Lambert's closet, and a neighborhood shopping guide by Jazmine Sullivan. "The Fabric of My Life" micro-site will be an off-shoot of the company's consumer Web site, TheFabricOfOurLives.com. The print campaign, launching this summer, will feature stills of all three artists in cotton wardrobe from the commercial shoot, along with notes from the singers about each garment.

"'The Fabric of My Life' is a totally integrated campaign that combines the best of the old and new for Cotton Incorporated. It takes the powerful equity of 'The Fabric of Our Lives' song and marries it with fashion and versatility so it appeals to a whole new generation of cotton wearers," says Cassandra Anderson, Creative Director at DDB.

Cotton Incorporated, funded by U.S. growers of upland cotton and importers of cotton and cotton textile products, is the research and marketing company representing upland cotton. The Program is designed and operated to improve the demand for and profitability of cotton.

Motown Celebrates the 70th Birthday of Marvin Gaye

MOTOWN CELEBRATES THE 70th BIRTHDAY OF MARVIN GAYE, ONE OF THE MOST ACCLAIMED ARTISTS IN MUSIC HISTORY

Santa Monica, CA (March 30, 2009) /PRNewswire/—In the 50th anniversary year of Motown, April 2, 2009 will mark the 70th birthday of the late great Marvin Gaye. Sadly, April 1 will also mark the 25th anniversary of his tragic death the day before his 45th birthday. Motown's top solo male artist of the '60s, led by his "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"—at one time the biggest selling single in Motown history—Gaye became the label's most revolutionary artist in the '70s, breaking down barriers whether singing about the body or the soul, social consciousness or sexual politics. From his '60s classic "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)," to his legendary rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game, he defined the soul in "soul music."

Marvin Gaye's popularity and influence continues. His 1971 album What's Going On forever changed the subject matter of popular music; it's one of Rolling Stone magazine's top 10 albums of all time. In 1973, Let's Get It On became perhaps the most passionate and sexual album ever recorded, led by its title track, which remains one of the most popular songs of all time, a certified Gold single back in the day, and in the digital music era it's a Gold digital download and a Platinum-selling ringtone as well. In 1987, three years after his death, Gaye was rightfully among only the second group of artists honored with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. More recently, Marvin Gaye was No. 6 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Singers Of All Time.

Noting the milestones of his birth and passing, Motown/UMe will issue a special digital-only album on March 31, Marvin Gaye: Then & Now, a 14-track set of rarities highlighted by the previously unreleased "Soulie" (pronounced "sue-lee"), a 1966 recording recently unearthed by Motown's New York-based producer Mickey Gentile, and a hot funk 2009 remix of "I Want You," Marvin's No. 1 hit from 1976, by the renowned John Morales of M+M Productions. Other tracks making their online debut are: the deep vault track "It's Your Party," and his two super-rare late '50s Chess recordings with Harvey & The Moonglows ("Mama Loocie," "Twelve Months Of The Year"). Rounding out this special collection are Marvin's earliest, pre-hit Motown singles ("Witchcraft," "Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide" and more).

Motown/UMe is also issuing a vinyl-only edition of United (Motown/UMe), Gaye's classic duet album with Tammi Terrell, on April 14. The standard by which all R&B male-female duos are measured, Gaye and Terrell first teamed on the 1967 album that included "If I Could Build My World Around You," "Your Precious Love" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough."

In addition, the ongoing, acclaimed "Motown 50" podcast series will feature special episodes on Marvin Gaye's life and music; Gaye is also well represented on the deluxe 10-CD box set Motown: The Complete No. 1's, which kicked off the year long celebration for Motown's 50th anniversary. Both The Real Thing, a DVD collection of his greatest television and concert appearances, and Gold, a 2-CD overview of his career, have recently been certified Gold. Gaye will also figure prominently in a two-hour documentary about Motown produced by the label's founder, Berry Gordy.

Beyonce's 'Diva' is America's #1 Dance Record!

Superstar's Latest Single From I AM...SASHA FIERCE Rockets To Top Of Billboard's Dance Single Club Play Chart

NEW YORK, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Pop superstar Beyonce has rocketed to the #1 slot on the Billboard Dance Single Club Play chart with "Diva," the latest single from her best-selling I AM...SASHA FIERCE album. Beyonce's sister Solange is closely following her sibling on the same chart with her own hit single -- "T.O.N.Y." -- at #11.

Released as a digital download and CD single on January 20, 2009, "Diva" has already been certified as a Gold ringtone by the RIAA.

An audacious video for "Diva," lensed by acclaimed director Melina Matsoukas, premiered on iTunes on December 22 in tandem with the video for "Halo," the third single from I AM...SASHA FIERCE.

Cowritten and produced by Beyonce, the irresistibly hypnotic dance track provocatively redefine "Diva" as the "female version of a hustla."

After reaching #5 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, "Diva" bulleted up the Hot 100 to #19, earning Beyonce her 16th Top 20 single. A genuine crossover success, "Diva" has reached #2 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart, #3 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and #19 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"If I Were A Boy," the first single from I AM...SASHA FIERCE, held down the #1 spot on the Billboard/iLike digital chart for 16 straight weeks, the longest run in the history of the chart.

Let Freedom Sing: The Music of the Civil Rights Movement

Remembering the Past While Celebrating the Present

Let Freedom Sing: The Music of the Civil Rights Movement

FAIRFAX, Va., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- It is one of the most inspiring stories in American history. Within a generation, Americans of African descent overturned several hundred years of slavery and brutally enforced segregation to win their Civil Rights. Civil Rights wasn't the first movement in American history to generate memorable songs, but it was the first in which music not only reflected the movement but drove it. The songs of the Civil Rights movement are the subject of a stunning new 3-CD set from Time Life Music that will be released during Black History Month 2009.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20081114/SF46277)

Let Freedom Sing--The Music of the Civil Rights Movement traces a seventy-year journey with songs that reflect the thoughts and feelings of those at the forefront affected by the movement as well as those simply trying to make sense of a troubled period in our history. Some of the songs are well-known (Respect, Change Is Gonna Come, Blowin' in the Wind, We Shall Overcome, Say It Loud I'm Black and I'm Proud, People Get Ready, Get up--Stand up, and many more) but the set also includes extremely rare recordings such as Brother Will Hairston's account of the Montgomery bus boycott, The Alabama Bus, and Nat King Cole's unreleased protest song from that era, We Are Americans Too.

The story begins with Go Down Moses ("let my people go"), one of many spirituals that led African Americans on their quest for Civil Rights. It continues with a bitter indictment of the lynchings that plagued the South after the Civil War (Billie Holiday's Strange Fruit) and an equally bitter indictment of the treatment of African Americans in the armed forces during World War II (Josh White's Uncle Sam Says). No Restricted Signs and Black, Brown and White protested the segregation that greeted returning servicemen. The call for change became more clamorous during the 1950s with the bus boycotts, the lynching of Emmett Till, the enforced integration of schools in Little Rock, Arkansas, and the lunch counter sit-ins. All were etched memorably in song.

The escalating bitterness of the 1960s is captured in songs like Nina Simone's Mississippi Goddam, Phil Ochs' Too Many Martyrs, and John Lee Hooker's The Motor City Is Burning. The riots following Dr. King's assassination are echoed in George Perkins' Cryin' in the Streets. And the Black Power era is reflected in Sly & the Family Stone's Stand, Curtis Mayfield's We the People Who Are Darker than Blue, Lee Dorsey's Yes We Can (adapted as a campaign slogan by President-Elect Barack Obama), and Gil Scott Heron's 1971 classic The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (cited by many as the first rap record). The story continues to the present day with artists such as Chuck D., who also wrote the introduction to the set.

"This project was conceived almost two years ago because we understood the importance of bringing the story to life and taking the time to get it right," states Michael Mitchell, Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Partnerships at Time Life Music. "For centuries, music vividly communicated injustices, especially for African-Americans in the South. This set encapsulates the struggles that eventually allowed African Americans, like me, to rise within our chosen professions, and allowed President-Elect Barack Obama to become the 44th President of the United States. Notably, in his acceptance speech, he adapted the words of Sam Cooke's "Change Is Gonna Come." The songs bring the movement alive with more immediacy than any other medium, and when we listen to LET FREEDOM SING from beginning to end, we realize what an incredible transformation has taken place during our lifetime."

Time Life's Vice President of Audio & Video Retail, Mike Jason, adds, "From the dark and ominous 'Strange Fruit' to the joyous message of 'Free At Last,' the set is filled with songs that reflect the painful, yet ultimately triumphant, Civil Rights struggle. Music nurtured the movement and the movement inspired the music. The nation's lowest point is undoubtedly its treatment of African Americans while the ability of African Americans to contribute so prodigiously to the culture in spite of that treatment is perhaps the finest example of what we can be as a nation. It's an honor for all of us at time Life to share this music and a small part of the story."

Time Life will release Let Freedom Sing: The Music of the Civil Rights Movement on January 27, 2009 and will feature liner notes as well as historical events that are relevant to the song selections.

Farewell Miriam Makeba

Miriam Makeba (Johannesburg, March 4, 1932 - Castel Volturno, November 10, 2008).

Miriam Makeba, the legendary South African singer popularly known as "Mama Afrika" has passed on with her golden voice echoing in the twilight of a new day as her immortal spirit took wings in her eternal flight.

Miriam Makeba was the most accomplished female singer out of Africa and one of the most gifted singers of all time.

I believe Miriam Makeba was born singing from the womb of her mother. She would have been one of the most expected artistes to perform at the World Cup Finals in South Africa in 2010.

We are going to miss this celebrated icon of African music.
