More Than 40 Per Cent of Canadian Children Have Been Accidentally Exposed to Inappropriate Content on Television
Netflix Study Suggests Content Concerns Prevent Parents From Letting Their Kids Select TV Programming
TORONTO, March 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- According to new research from Netflix, 61 per cent of parents would like to give their children the ability to select their own programming, but 67 per cent worry about what they're watching.
The research, conducted by Ipsos-Reid on behalf of Netflix in Canada, takes a look at Canadian families' television viewing habits to understand how parents and children watch television together and alone.
The research reveals that parents are rightfully concerned about what their kids are watching. More than 40 per cent of kids have been accidentally exposed to something on TV that scared them or have seen commercials that were not suitable for them. Some kids have even seen a movie alone that required an adult present. On the other hand, the majority of parents admit that they find themselves watching children's programming even when their child is not in the room.
To help parents and kids find a broad selection of great TV shows and movies that are age appropriate for children 12 and under, the Netflix "Just for Kids" section lets Netflix members scroll through content that's selected especially for them. Using an easy-to-navigate system, TV shows and movies are organized by genres like superheroes, princesses, and dinosaurs, and feature clear and simple descriptions of the plot of each title. As always, there are never any commercials on Netflix.
"Canadian kids are watching an average of 69 minutes of programming alone," said David Watson, Director of Product Innovation, Kids and Family, Netflix. "The Netflix 'Just for Kids' section within the Netflix website ensures parents don't have to worry about what their kids are watching, when they're watching TV on their own or with friends."
The survey also reveals some interesting facts about what's important to parents when watching TV with their children:
Nearly 70 per cent of parents worry about what their children are watching on TV. Three out of four parents are worried about the advertising their children are exposed to and four out of five parents say watching programming without commercials is important. Three-quarters of parents find it important not to be restricted by traditional TV scheduling. The overwhelming majority, 89 per cent, say it's important to be able to choose from a large selection of programming; Letting their children select the TV shows and movies they watch together is important for 86 per cent of Canadian parents; When it comes to selecting their own programming, 72 per cent of parents say their child typically asks for the name of a TV show or movie while 34 per cent say their child references a character instead; and Parents' desire to give their children more discretion over what they watch increases as their child gets older, but the concern about what their children watch does not decrease.
The Netflix "Just for Kids" section is currently available in Canada on PC, Mac, Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3, and Apple TV devices. Other devices will follow this year.
Survey Methodology These are some of the findings of an Ipsos-Reid poll conducted between March 20-23, 2012, on behalf of Netflix. For this survey, a sample of 1,013 parents of children aged 12 and under from Ipsos' Canadian online panel was interviewed online. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. A survey with an unweighted probability sample of this size and a 100% response rate would have an estimated margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what the results would have been had the entire population of parents in Canada been polled. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error.

LOS ANGELES, March 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX; TSX: IMX) and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that the fantasy action adventure Wrath of the Titans will be released in the immersive IMAX® 3D format in 482 IMAX® theatres worldwide beginning Friday, March 30, simultaneous with the film's North American wide release. The film will be released this Friday in 293 IMAX theatres domestically and 176 IMAX theatres internationally, with 13 additional international runs to debut over the coming weeks. Additional playdates will be added as pending bookings are confirmed.
Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson star once again as gods at war in Wrath of the Titans : An IMAX 3D Experience. Directed by Jonathan Liebesman, the film is the sequel to the global box office hit Clash of the Titans.
The IMAX release of Wrath of the Titans will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
About Wrath of the Titans A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus (Worthington)—the demigod son of Zeus (Neeson)—is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year-old son, Helius.
But unbeknownst to Perseus, a struggle for supremacy has been raging between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity's lack of devotion, the gods are losing hold of their immortality, as well as control over the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades (Fiennes) and Poseidon (Danny Huston). The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous Underworld.
Now, Perseus cannot ignore his true calling as Hades, along with Zeus' godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramirez), switches loyalties and makes a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titan's strength grows stronger as Zeus' remaining godly powers are siphoned…and hell is unleashed on earth.
Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon's demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the Underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.
Jonathan Liebesman directed the film from a screenplay by Dan Mazeau & David Leslie Johnson, story by Greg Berlanti & David Leslie Johnson & Dan Mazeau, based on characters created by Beverley Cross. The film was produced by Basil Iwanyk, who also produced the previous hit "Clash of the Titans," and Polly Johnsen. The executive producers are Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Callum McDougall, Kevin De La Noy and Louis Leterrier.

Jazz in the Gardens' Magical Lucky 7th Year Draws 48,000 Fans With Some Celebrity Surprises A stellar line up, exotic food and perfect weather credited with festival's success
MIAMI, March 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Almost 50,000 people from all over the world attended what is being called "the BEST Jazz in the Gardens yet," on March 17th & 18th, 2012 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens. The lucky 7th year enjoyed its highest attendance levels ever; perfect mild and sunny weekend weather; exotic foods including the festival favorite "Reed's Conch Salad"; and magical performances by A-list national artists Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, Patti LaBelle, KEM, Ledisi, Kenny G, Doug E Fresh, Kevin Eubanks, Ramsey Lewis and Nicole Henry and celebrity sightings of singer/actress Queen Latifah, Minister Louis Farrakhan Muhammad, Sr., comedian Robert Townsend and actor Glenn Turman. First time festival host MC Lyte was met with rousing applause as she introduced each national act and bantered with an enthralled crowd of thousands.
"Jazz in the Gardens just gets better and better every year, but this year it was simply remarkable. The performers, the attendees, the food, and the weather created a perfect combination. People traveled from near and far to see and experience this amazing festival. It gives me with sheer joy to see this event develop to where it has become a nationally recognized venue and in turn making the City of Miami Gardens a travel destination," says Miami Gardens Mayor Shirley Gibson.
Saturday March 17th
The weekend's festivities kicked off to clear skies and Miami's own celebrated Jody Hill & the Deep Fried Funk Band who took to the stage with a tight set and strong vocals. Local Miami Gardens favorites Ike & Val thrilled early audiences with their unique style and Ike's mastery of the blues guitar, playing with the intensity of Jimi Hendrix. Jazz aficionados were glued to their seats as the legendary Ramsey Lewis performed time tested jazz classics with his talented Electric Band. Old school human beat box Doug E. Fresh followed with a high energy performance that had the whole festival doing "the Dougie" while laughing and singing along as he led the audience down memory lane with a medley of old school hits and classic TV theme songs. Grammy nominated R&B soulstress Ledisi followed with an eclectic and rich performance, engaging the early evening audience. Love was the mood set by the next performer, classy and polished KEM, who thrilled with hit after hit of romance inspired songs. The night ended with an exuberant and surreal performance by Jill Scott , who was one of the most eagerly anticipated musicians of the weekend. Scott sported a huge afro and a wide smile, taking her fans for "a long walk," visibly relishing performing hit after spectacular Scott hit.
Sunday March 18th
A refreshed and eager adult crowd, dressed in their Sunday best, returned for the second glorious day of the Lucky 7 Jazz in the Gardens. For the first time in the festival's history gospel graced the stage with local sensation Sensere, who promised to deliver a rock-infused, soul-based, Gospel set and did not disappoint. Then internationally recognized South Florida based Nicole Henry kicked off Sunday's national artist performances with her rousing renditions of pop and R&B inspired jazz selections. The man who rocked the Tonight Show for 15 years, Kevin Eubanks , took to the stage after Henry, with his smooth jazz guitar backed up by a powerful rhythm section that rocked the park. Kenny G.'s always appreciated long held saxophone renditions and playful audience interactions kept the vibe alive, instrumental style. Then, Ms. Patti LaBelle , diva extraordinaire, took the stage, belting out a rousing rendition of her # 1 hit "New Attitude" to enthusiastic shrieks of appreciation from young and old alike. The excitement filled weekend ended on a very high note as Queen of Hip Hop Soul Mary J. Blige brought her heartfelt "go girl" energy and the audience to its feet with powerful vocals and personal story to close the Lucky 7th Annual Jazz in the Gardens as only Mary J. Blige could.
"Jazz in the Gardens" owes its success to a simple formula: a star-studded line-up, great food, extraordinarily affordable ticket prices and amazing weather. NEW YORK, March 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Island Def Jam global superstar Justin Bieber returns to the front lines with his brand new single, "Boyfriend" set for worldwide release today at radio, and a week-long exclusive via iTunes starting today. "Boyfriend" is the first advance single from BELIEVE , Justin's eagerly anticipated new studio album, set for release this summer. "Boyfriend" was written by Justin Bieber, Mike Posner, Mason D. Levy and Mat Musto; and produced by Mason D. Levy and Mike Posner.
With worldwide album sales in excess of 15 million units, Justin has dominated pop culture and social media for more than two years. He has over 41 million Facebook followers, and nearly 19 million Twitter followers, and over 2.7 billion YouTube views – he is far and away the most popular YouTube artist of all time.
"The momentum behind Justin's phenomenal success continues with 'Boyfriend,' destined to be one of this year's iconic single releases," said Steve Bartels, President & COO, Island Def Jam Music Group. "What Justin and the IDJ team have achieved since 2010 has been etched into music history, but it's only the beginning. Be prepared for the juggernaut that will take place with today's release of 'Boyfriend,' and the Summer arrival of BELIEVE ."
Justin finished up 2011 with a #1 Soundscan debut for Under The Mistletoe , becoming the youngest artist in Billboard history to have a holiday album enter at #1. It also marked his third album in 18 months to enter the chart at #1, after My World 2.0 in 2010, and Never Say Never: The Remixes (February 2011, soundtrack to the highest domestic-grossing concert film in history, $98 million).
At the same time, he also became the first solo artist in Billboard history to chart three #1 albums before his 18th birthday (celebrated earlier this month, on March 1st).
BELIEVE will be Justin's fifth major release since he arrived at RBMG/lsland Def Jam in November 2009 with My World , containing his worldwide debut hit, "One Time," along with the follow-up "One Less Lonely Girl," and two more chart hits, "Love Me" and "Favorite Girl." With that, Justin became the first solo artist in history to send four songs from a debut album into the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 prior to the album's release.
Justin's follow-up, My World 2.0 struck RIAA double-platinum on the strength of the triple-platinum "Baby" featuring Ludacris, one of the top-selling singles of 2010. Never Say Never: The Remixes (released Valentine's Day 2011), with its Top 10 title-tune single "Never Say Never" featuring Jaden Smith, extended Justin's platinum streak into 2011.

Second iREP International Documentary Film Festival Opens in Lagos
The second iREPRESENT International Documentary Film Festival (iREP DOCU-FEST) opened to a full house Thursday morning at the Terra Kulture on Victoria Island, Lagos. The Executive Director of iREP, Femi Odugbemi gave the welcome address on the goals of the festival; followed by the iREP Hall of Fame Awards given to accomplished Nigerian documentary filmmakers, Ambassador Yussuf Maman, Cyril Okonkwo, Sandra Obiago and Francis Oladele who was absent and Tunde Kelani received the award on his behalf.
The opening film of the second iRepresent International Documentary Film Festival, An African Election is a film by Jarreth Merz. The 2008 presidential elections in Ghana, West Africa, serve as a backdrop for this feature documentary, which looks behind the scenes of a complex, political machinery of a third world country trying to catch up with the first world. Merz embarks on a once in a lifetime political journey.
Prof. Jean Paul Collyen
The keynote address on African Cinema and the Frontiers of Documentary by Prof. Jean Paul Collyen captivated the audience of both local and international filmmakers, movie buffs, special guests and others. The famous anthropologist and documentary filmmaker and Director of the institute of African Arts in Paris appreciated the sociological perspectives of Nollywood narratives and commended the phenomenal ingenuity of the producers who have been able to make movies without any government support and with their hard earned money in contrast to the big budget studio productions of Hollywood and Bollywood. Prominent Nigerian filmmakers like Tunde Kelani, Ms. Sandra Mbanefo Obiago and Teco Benson and a special guest, Katarina Hedren from South Africa discussed the keynote address and the controversial poster: Is Nollywood Documentary? Which is the sub theme of Democracy and Culture - The Documentary Film Intervention, the theme within the framework of Africa in self-conversation.
About 30 films will be screened in the four-day duration of the festival with special workshops and conferences on camera works, scriptwriting, etc.
The co-founders, Makin Soyinka, Jahman Anikulapo and Femi Odugbemi appreciated their partnership with Goethe Institut and AG DokumentarFilm (German Association of Independent Producers). Also present were representatives of the Association of Independent Producers from Cameroon (APIC).
The organizers said there will be a Producers Forum observed by the Documentary Network Africa (DNA) represented by one of its coordinators, Katarina Hedren from South Africa. iREP is DNA’s representatives in Nigeria and much of West Africa. The Producers Forum is coordinated by Barbel Mauch, a vastly experienced producer, who in October 2001 founded the Babel Mauch Film with intention to co-produce films at an international level. The company also offers consulting agency services for production, distribution and for film festivals, especially from Germany, France and Africa. Bärbel has an extensive network of contacts thanks to her considerable experience in production, distribution and as publicist with Iskra in Paris as well as many film festivals and with her own company. For over 20 years now, she has worked for Französische Fimtage Tübingen, where she organises the African Section, and since 2005 has been a member of the selection committee. Since 2006, she has been a consultant at Berlinale Talent Campus and expert for talents from Africa and the Middle East.
Between 2008 and 2009, she coordinated the SHOOT! Workshops on documentary film production for the Nigerian Film Corporation in Jos, Nigeria; and in 2009 coordinated workshops for the festival Lagunimages in Cotonou/Benin.
From 2009 to 2011, she was chairwoman at the African-German co-production meeting during the festival Ecrans Noirs, Cameroon, organized by AG Dok and APIC in collaboration with Goethe-Institut Yaoundé. She also served 2009 Expert at the Nigeroon/Cameria workshop in Bamenda, Cameroon, organized by the Goethe-Institut.
Jens Wenkel is a Berlin-based filmmaker and medical doctor. As a doctor and researcher, he worked for Doctors Without Borders in different countries of Africa for three years. Recently, he finished a documentary film about urban every day life in the megacity of Lagos, which was premiered at the IDFA in Amsterdam. Together with Matthias Luthardt he organized a documentary workshop entitled Spirit and Spirituality under the umbrella of the Goethe-Institut Lagos. Wenkel has done so much research and cinematic work in Lagos.
There is no ware, no matter how damaged that the potter cannot repair. But the owner of the ware must be honest enough to admit the damages than tell lies.
For how can we re-brand Nigeria if we cannot re-brand our ways of life?
What is the use of saying you are a Christian when you behave like a pagan?
Must you cheat or lie and steal or kill to make ends meet? And of course, you are what you do, no matter how many lies and photographs you post on Facebook and Google Plus and other places online. You will only be fooling yourself. As you go to Church, mosque or even shrine today, you will only receive as much as you give.
Whatever you sow, you shall reap, for no matter the seasons and the reasons, we are judged by our own deeds.
Re-branding Nigeria begins with the person you are gazing at in your mirror.
The truth will always find us out.
Re-branding Nigeria begins with the person you are gazing at in the mirror.
God bless Nigeria and save us from the lunatic fringe among us. Amen.
